Reflections on China, ASEAN and Middle East

Description: As the world’s leader in renewable energy, China is set to install 200GW of renewables in 2024. While China is on the pathway to decarbonisation, the country is committed to ensuring high-quality economic development. China leads in green technologies and nature conservation, planting over 78 billion trees, doubling forest coverage, and prioritising national parks for endangered species.

Expanding to an even broader perspective, ASEAN is also acutely exposed to climate change, with five of the world’s 20 most at-risk countries located in the region. In August 2023, ASEAN Economic Ministers endorsed a visionary ASEAN Strategy for Carbon Neutrality, unlocking up to US$5.3 trillion in economic opportunity.

This panel will reflect upon how China and ASEAN countries can remain steadfast in their commitment to the concept of a global community of shared future, keeping a balancing act whilst addressing rapid industrialisation and urbanisation that have placed immense pressure on its natural resources and ecosystems.

The dialogue will also cover cooperation between Middle East and Asian nations, with a special focus on sustainable development, investment opportunities, and fostering economic stability. Collaboration in various sectors such as renewable energy, infrastructure development, and technology innovation can lead to mutually beneficial outcomes including the socio-economic impacts that can contribute to the broader goals of sustainable development and common prosperity.

The big question to answer is how philanthropies, family offices, venture capitalists and impact investing with corporates can catalyse a sustainable transformation through harnessing diverse economies, green technologies, and sustainable practices towards a carbon-neutral future for our planet.

Urban Development & Infrastructure

Description: Cities contribute over 60% of global greenhouse gas emissions, with urban transport accounting for 40% of CO2 emissions. In ASEAN, the increasing difficulties experienced by millions of urban residents to find secure, affordable housing in the face of land shortages and accelerating urban population growth.

Cities in Asia play a crucial role in the net-zero transition by shaping energy infrastructure and adopting alternative fuels. To reach net-zero by 2050, reverse nature loss in our more and more urbanised world, funding for inclusive climate and nature transitions must be increased by more than $3 trillion annually. How can we increase funding for adaptation, mitigation, and development in emerging markets and developing economies without exacerbating their debt burden?

This panel delves into how cities can forge pathways to mitigate climate threats to their infrastructure. Industry experts elucidate how regulations, planning for energy resilience and sustainability, investment in research and development, and philanthropic-public-private partnerships can contribute to achieving these goals.

Powering Green Transition

Description: Over half of the global population live in cities today, with this figure projected to increase to 7 in 10 people by 2050. Cities, which account for 70% of total CO2 emissions, are also impacted significantly by climate change and nature loss, with Asia home to 99 of the world’s 100 most environmentally vulnerable cities.

As a key engine of global growth, the region’s Emerging Markets and Developing Economies can play a pivotal role on global climate and nature action by leveraging green infrastructure to drive urban transformation and economic prosperity. However, multilateral development bank project financing, and development finance are insufficient to drive this at scale. With an estimated USD 3-5 trillion required annually to drive the net-zero, nature positive transition, it is critical to mobilise and drive meaningful collaboration and targeted investment across the entire finance ecosystem including governments, corporates, philanthropies, family offices and impact investors to design safe, affordable and resilient cities.

Rising to this challenge, GAEA aims to tap into the catalytic tools which philanthropies, family offices and impact investors, and coordinate with actors across the capital stack to de-risk and unlock climate and nature investments, elevate Asia as a green, urban powerhouse. This dialogue explores the challenges and opportunities of addressing two key areas of capacity building in multistakeholder green financing at scale; incentive mechanisms, and the incubation of investable urban green projects.

Circular Economy, Materials, and Industrial Decarbonisation

Description: Enhancing material efficiency has the potential to achieve significant reductions in CO2 emissions by 2060, with the potential to decrease total emissions by around 20% for steel, 70% for cement, and 30% for aluminium. Meanwhile, there is high potential to accelerate the decarbonisation of hard-to-abate industrial sectors through regional cooperation, while maximising job creation and economic competitiveness through Industrial Clusters.

What standardised approach can help industrial clusters reach their full economic, employment, and environmental potential? How to establish a global green network of industry clusters that includes emerging markets and philanthropists would also support broader efforts on just transition and material efficiency?
